How Much Paint Does a Room Really Take?

"One gallon per room" is one of the most commonly repeated paint rules of thumb, and it's wrong often enough that following it literally leads to a lot of mid-project store runs — it happens to work in a narrow band of room sizes and conditions, and badly fails outside that band in both directions.
Where the rule comes from

The real math, worked
Take a 16x20 room with 9-foot ceilings: perimeter is 72 feet, wall area is 72 x 9 = 648 sq ft, minus roughly 70 sq ft for two doors and two windows, netting about 578 sq ft. At 375 sq ft/gallon coverage and two coats, that's (578/375) x 2 ≈ 3.1 gallons — a far cry from the one gallon the flat rule would suggest, and a genuine two-trip-to-the-store gap if you'd trusted the shortcut.

Why the rule persists despite failing so often
