Wallpaper Pattern Repeats Explained

Two wallpaper rolls of identical physical size can yield very different amounts of usable wall coverage, and the pattern repeat is entirely responsible for that gap — it's the single biggest variable in wallpaper math that a simple 'roll area divided by wall area' calculation completely misses.
What a repeat actually is
A pattern repeat is the vertical distance the design travels before it starts over identically. A plain texture or a very fine, small-scale print might have a repeat of just an inch or two — functionally negligible for cutting purposes. A bold, large-scale floral or geometric print might have a repeat of 20-25 inches or more, meaning the design doesn't fully repeat until you've gone nearly two feet down the roll.
How repeat length wastes paper
Every strip cut from a roll has to start at a point in the pattern that lines up correctly with the strip next to it. With a drop match and the same 20-inch repeat, alternating strips are offset by half the repeat (10 inches) — strip two starts 10 inches into the pattern relative to strip one, strip three lines back up with strip one, and so on. This offset generally means you can't reuse a roll's remainder for the next strip nearly as often, since the offset rarely lines up with what's left, pushing real waste for a drop-match pattern meaningfully higher than a straight match of the same repeat length.
Why this changes roll count more than people expect
A small-repeat, straight-match paper on a standard room might need barely more than the raw area-to-roll-coverage ratio suggests. A large-repeat, drop-match paper on the identical room can need noticeably more rolls — sometimes 20-30% more — purely from repeat-matching waste, even though both scenarios started with the exact same wall area and roll size.
