How this calculation works
Hole volume (cubic feet) = pi x (radius in feet)^2 x depth in feet, using the hole's diameter, not the post's. Post displacement = pi x (post radius)^2 x the depth the post is buried. Net concrete volume = hole volume minus post displacement volume, then converted to bags the same way as the slab calculator (0.45 cu ft/60lb bag, 0.6 cu ft/80lb bag).
A common rule of thumb for hole depth is roughly a third of the post's above-ground height, plus a few inches of gravel at the bottom for drainage — burying a post too shallow risks frost heave in cold climates and wind-load failure on tall fence or deck posts.
