Plank and laminate flooring is sold in boxes with a printed square-footage-per-box figure, and the waste allowance on top of your raw floor area is what separates a job that finishes clean from one where the last row runs out mid-plank. A simple straight, running-pattern install (planks parallel to the longest wall, staggered end joints) wastes relatively little; a diagonal layout wastes considerably more because every plank along two walls needs an angled cut instead of a straight one.

How this calculation works
Boxes needed = (floor area x (1 + waste%)) / sq ft per box, rounded up to a whole box. Running-pattern waste is typically 5-10%, mostly from staggering end joints and trimming the first and last row. Diagonal layouts (planks at 45 degrees to the walls) waste 15% or more because nearly every perimeter plank needs an angled cut, and offcuts from a diagonal cut usually can't be reused elsewhere in the room the way a straight offcut can.
Doorway thresholds also need their own small allowance — transitions between rooms often require a plank cut to an odd width that doesn't come from your main waste percentage.

That spare fraction matters more than it looks: it is enough for the transition-strip cuts a great room's doorways generate, without touching a full box held back purely for future repairs.

Raising the waste field to 16% for a diagonal layout — realistic once nearly every plank along two walls needs an angled cut — adds just under a full box to the same 187 sq ft floor: 10 boxes instead of 9.
The offcuts driving that extra box are the real difference from the running pattern above: a diagonal cut's leftover triangle almost never reuses cleanly elsewhere in the room, where a running layout's straight offcuts often start the next row.
Common mistakes
- Rounding boxes down 'to save money' when the area lands close to a box boundary — a single missing plank stops the job.
- Not checking that all boxes share the same production/dye lot, since plank flooring shows lot-to-lot color variation more visibly than tile once it's down.

How much extra flooring should I keep after the job?
Keep at least one unopened box, unlabeled and stored flat, in case a plank gets damaged later — matching a discontinued laminate pattern years later is often impossible.
Does room shape affect waste beyond the layout pattern?
Yes — an L-shaped room or one with a lot of closets and jogs wastes more than a simple rectangle regardless of layout, because more rows end in a partial-width cut.
How long does flooring really need to acclimate before installation?
Most manufacturers specify 48-72 hours in the actual room at normal living conditions, though some engineered products need less and some solid wood products need longer — check your specific product, since installing too early is a common cause of gapping or buckling that shows up weeks later, well after the boxes have been opened and can't be returned.
Can I mix boxes from two different orders if I run short?
Only if you can confirm they're the same production lot — otherwise expect a visible seam of shade variation where the two batches meet, which is why ordering a small cushion above the calculated need up front is usually better than risking a second order later.
