How this calculation works

Seed pounds needed = area (in thousand sq ft) x seeding rate for your species and use case. New-lawn rates run considerably higher than overseeding rates for the same species, since a bare-soil seeding needs enough density to establish a full stand from scratch, while overseeding only needs to thicken existing turf and fill bare patches.

That halving is the direct, mechanical consequence of the rate field alone; the formula never knows this is the same lawn being reseeded rather than a brand-new one half the size. Getting the rate right for the actual job — not just the actual lawn — is what this calculator can't do for you.

Common mistakes

  • Using a single generic seeding rate across all species — the correct pounds-per-thousand-sq-ft rate for fescue is not the correct rate for bermuda.
