Brick and Block Dimensions and Courses

Masonry units are made deliberately undersized. A modular brick's face measures 7-5/8 by 2-1/4 inches — not 8 by 2-1/2, which would be the tidier number — and that gap between the unit and the round module it's meant to fill is not a manufacturing shortfall. It's the whole trick: leave room for a joint, and the unit plus the joint lands on a clean, buildable dimension every time.

Undersized on purpose: brick and the joint
A modular brick's 7-5/8 by 2-1/4 inch face plus a 3/8 inch mortar joint on each of the two dimensions it repeats along brings the unit to exactly 8 by 2-5/8 inches of wall it actually occupies. That's the module — the number a bricklayer actually works to — and it's why brick walls, window openings and coursing tend to land on multiples of 8 inches horizontally, even though no single brick measures 8 inches across.
Widen the joint and the module grows with it: the same brick at a 1/2 inch joint occupies 8-1/8 by 2-3/4 inches instead, which changes both the bricks-per-square-foot figure and where each course lands relative to a window head. Modular, queen, king and utility, compared

- King — longer and shallower-faced than modular again, but far less standardized between manufacturers than the three sizes above; a king brick job is worth checking against the specific product's own spec sheet rather than assuming a fixed figure.

Standard block and the 8-inch module
Standard concrete block follows the identical undersizing logic at a larger scale: a nominal 16 by 8 inch block actually measures 15-5/8 by 7-5/8 inches, which brings it to exactly 16 by 8 inches once a 3/8 inch joint is added on each dimension. That's not a coincidence with brick's own module — it's the same design principle applied to a unit four times the size, which is part of why block and brick coordinate reasonably well on the same job.

Course height, and why three brick courses roughly match one block course
Modular brick's vertical module — 2-5/8 inches — means three courses rise 7-7/8 inches, just shy of a full 8 inches. That near-match to standard block's 8 inch module is the reason brick veneer over a block backup wall coordinates as cleanly as it does in practice: three brick courses land close enough to one block course that the two systems can share the same window heads, lintels and control-joint locations without constant fractional adjustment.
For a plain wall, course count is the fastest sanity check available before ordering: wall height in inches divided by the vertical module tells you how many courses the wall will actually take, and a course count that lands on an awkward fraction is a signal to adjust the wall height, the joint width, or the opening head heights before any brick is ordered — not after the third course is already crooked.
Why 3/8 inch is the default joint everywhere on this site
3/8 inch is the joint width both modular brick and standard block are dimensioned around, and it's the most common joint width in the trade, which is why it's the default across every masonry calculator here rather than a value chosen for convenience. It is genuinely a default, not a requirement — 1/4 to 1/2 inch joints are all used in practice, driven by the specific unit, the mortar type, and sometimes by matching an existing wall on an addition or repair.
Because joint width moves the module in both directions at once, it's worth locking it in before ordering rather than after: a joint chosen to match an existing wall changes both the unit count and the course height together, and getting it right up front avoids a wall that's the correct brick count but the wrong number of courses tall.
FAQ
Why isn't a modular brick just made 8 by 2-5/8 inches to begin with, instead of undersized?
Because the mortar joint has to go somewhere, and building it into the unit's own size rather than adding it separately would mean every brick touches its neighbor with no adjustable gap at all — which removes the ability to tune the joint for a different mortar type, a different look, or a match to an existing wall.
Do utility brick and standard block ever get used on the same wall?
