Cubic feet to cubic yards: where the divide-by-27 trips people up
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet — 3 feet cubed — and the usual mistake isn't the division itself, it's forgetting that area in square feet needs to be combined with a depth in inches, converted to feet, before the cubic-foot figure even exists to divide. Area (sq ft) times depth (in inches, divided by 12 to get feet) gives cubic feet; cubic feet divided by 27 gives cubic yards.
