Two houses with identical footprints can need noticeably different shingle counts if one has a steep roof and the other a low-slope roof, because the steeper roof has more actual surface area to cover for the same footprint below it.

How this calculation works

Roof surface area = footprint area x pitch multiplier, where the multiplier scales up with steepness (a low-slope roof near 4:12 pitch has a relatively small multiplier close to 1.05; a steep roof at 12:12 pitch or beyond has a considerably larger multiplier). Squares = surface area / 100. Bundles per square is typically 3 for standard three-tab or architectural shingles, though some heavier architectural products run differently — always check the specific product's coverage.

Starter strip runs along the eaves and rakes, and ridge cap runs along every ridge and hip — both are sold separately from field shingles and sized by linear footage, not by square footage, so they need their own line item in the order rather than being assumed to come out of the field-shingle bundle count.

At 8% waste for a simple gable, this comes to 13.36 squares and 41 bundles, barely more than the flat footprint's raw 12 squares would suggest before any pitch or waste is applied.

This is the case where footprint and true roof area are nearly interchangeable — a low-slope roof this shallow is the one situation on this page where skipping the pitch multiplier wouldn't have cost much accuracy, though it's never zero.

Why do two same-size houses need different shingle amounts?

Because roof pitch changes actual surface area for the same footprint — a steep roof has meaningfully more surface to cover than a low-slope roof over the same house outline, which is exactly what the pitch multiplier accounts for.

Do I need extra shingles for a roof with a lot of valleys and hips?

Yes — complex roof shapes with multiple valleys, hips, and dormers create more angled cuts and waste than a simple gable roof, so a higher waste percentage (often 15% or more) is realistic on those roofs.

Should I order shingles from the same lot for a large re-roof?
