The Estimate That Was Right and Still Wrong

A wrong quantity is the comfortable kind of mistake. The number on the page looks too small for the room, too few pieces for the run, and someone catches it before a truck shows up. A wrong unit is the dangerous kind, because the number on the page can be exactly right for the thing its label says and exactly wrong for what actually gets loaded — and nothing about the arithmetic that produced it will flag the difference.

In each of the cases below, the estimate was not wrong on its own terms. It was wrong about which unit attaches to it: a cord of firewood that is not the cord that was ordered, a cubic yard of dug soil that outgrew the hole it came out of, a sheet of plywood whose stated size was never the coverage you can actually use, a delivery quoted in tons against a calculation done in yards. Each one ends with the same number on the page and a different amount on the truck.

A face cord is not a cord, and nobody asked which one

A full cord is a stack 4 ft high, 4 ft deep and 8 ft long — 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, air gaps included, and it is the unit every firewood price is legally supposed to reference. A face cord is the same 4 ft by 8 ft face, but only as deep as the pieces are cut, and most firewood is cut to something well under 4 ft — 16 in is common. A face cord of 16 in pieces is close to a third of a full cord's actual wood, and 'cord' spoken on the phone without a qualifier leaves it genuinely ambiguous which one is being quoted.

Nobody involved in a mismatched delivery is lying. The seller quoted a face cord because that is what they stack and sell locally; the buyer heard 'cord' and pictured the full 128 cubic feet from the firewood cord calculator, and both numbers are internally consistent right up until the delivered stack is measured against the expectation. The fix is not a better calculator — it is asking for piece length and stack dimensions before the order is placed, not after.

The cubic yard that came out of the ground outgrows the hole it left

Soil sitting undisturbed underground is more tightly packed than the same soil once a machine has broken it apart — digging introduces air gaps that were not there in the bank, so a cubic yard removed from the ground becomes noticeably more than a cubic yard once it is loose in a pile or a truck bed. This swell is commonly 15 to 30% depending on soil type, and it runs the opposite direction from compaction, where the same loose material is deliberately packed back down tighter than either its bank or its loose state.

Bank volume, loose volume and compacted volume are three different numbers for one hole

A dumpster or a haul-away truck sized to the bank volume of the hole — the volume you'd calculate from the excavation's own length, width and depth — comes up short once the dirt is actually loaded, because the swell added real volume that never existed as bank cubic yards but is exactly as real sitting in the truck bed. Going the other direction, backfill compacted into a trench settles below its loose delivered volume, so a fill order sized off the loose figure alone can leave a trench visibly low a season later. Nominal lumber, and a sheet that was never actually 4 by 8 once it's on the wall

A framed 2x4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 in, not 2 by 4 — the nominal size describes the rough-cut lumber before it was planed smooth, and every span, spacing and count calculation on this site works from the planed dimension because that is what actually carries load or takes a fastener. Sheet goods carry a quieter version of the same trap: a plywood or OSB panel is sold as 4 by 8 ft, but a panel with a tongue-and-groove edge or one installed with a required gap loses real usable coverage at every joint, so the number of sheets a roof or a subfloor needs is never simply the deck area divided by 32 sq ft.

A gravel calculation naturally happens in cubic yards, because that is the unit a length-times-width-times-depth formula produces. Gravel is usually priced and delivered by the ton, because that is the unit a scale at the quarry produces. Converting between them needs a density figure specific to the actual stone — crushed limestone, river rock and decomposed granite do not weigh the same per cubic yard, sometimes by a wide enough margin that using one stone's density on an order for a different stone under- or over-delivers by a meaningful fraction of a ton. The one question that catches all four of these before the truck arrives

Every case here shares a shape: a number that is internally correct and externally ambiguous, because the unit attached to it was assumed rather than confirmed on both ends of the transaction. The reliable check is not redoing the arithmetic — the arithmetic was fine — it's asking the supplier to name the exact unit their number uses, out loud, before it becomes a delivery. 'A cord of 16-inch pieces, stacked 4 by 8,' 'loose cubic yards, not bank,' 'tons at this stone's actual density' are each one sentence longer than the bare number, and each one is the sentence that keeps the estimate that was right from becoming an answer that was wrong.

FAQ

If a seller won't specify face cord or full cord, is there a way to check after delivery?

Yes — measure the actual stack: height in feet times length in feet times depth in feet (the piece length) gives cubic feet, and dividing by 128 tells you what fraction of a full cord arrived, regardless of what word was used on the invoice.

Does swell factor apply the same way to clay soil as to sandy soil?

No — cohesive soils like clay tend to swell more than loose sandy soils when disturbed, because clay's particles interlock more tightly in their undisturbed state and the gap opened by breaking that structure apart is larger, so a haul-away order for a clay-heavy site benefits from a swell figure at the higher end of the typical range rather than a flat default.

Why do two gravel suppliers quote the same driveway job in different units?

Some yards price by the ton because that's how their scale and their truck are set up to bill, and others price by the cubic yard because that matches how landscapers typically order — neither is wrong, but comparing two quotes in different units without converting them to the same basis first isn't actually comparing prices.

Is there one conversion factor between bank and loose cubic yards worth memorizing?

Not usefully — the range runs from roughly 15% to 30% depending on soil type and how it was disturbed, wide enough that a single memorized number will be wrong on plenty of sites; treating it as a range to check against your specific soil, rather than a constant, avoids the exact trap this page is about.
