How this calculation works

Total weight comes straight from volume times density — a material property that varies enormously by what you're hauling, from around 800 lb per cubic yard for bark mulch up to 4,000 lb or more for wet clay fill. Trips by weight divides that total by the vehicle's payload rating; trips by volume divides the raw cubic yardage by the bed or trailer's capacity. Whichever of those two trip counts is larger is the one that actually governs, because you can't exceed either limit on a single load.

The safe load per trip is the smaller of two numbers: the volume the payload allows at this material's density, and the volume the bed physically holds. For most light, bulky material — mulch, compost, most bagged soil blends — the bed fills up before the payload does, and volume binds. For dense material — wet soil, sand, gravel — the opposite is common, and a truck that looks half-empty can already be over its rated weight.

totalWeight
cubicYards x density, in pounds. Density is entered per cubic yard and varies by material — this is the term that changes the most between a load of mulch and a load of wet clay of the same volume.

Total weight divided by the vehicle's rated payload, rounded up. This is the trip count if payload is the binding constraint — the case for anything denser than roughly the payload-to-bed-volume ratio of the vehicle itself.

At mulch's low density, this truck's 4,000 lb payload could theoretically carry 5 cu yd of it before hitting the weight limit — well more than the 2.5 cu yd bed actually holds. Common mistakes

  • Loading a truck bed to the rails on visual fullness alone. That's the right call for mulch and badly wrong for wet soil, sand or gravel, where the payload limit is reached long before the bed looks full.

FAQ

Why does the same truck need six trips for topsoil but only three for the same volume of mulch?

Because topsoil is roughly three times denser than mulch by volume, and payload — not bed space — is what runs out first once a material gets dense enough. The trip count tracks whichever limit binds, and for topsoil in a half-ton truck that's almost always weight, not volume.

Is it safe to slightly exceed a payload rating for a short trip?

This page treats payload as a hard limit because that's how it's meant to be used — exceeding it measurably degrades braking distance and handling, and it can void a warranty claim on suspension or drivetrain failure regardless of trip length. If a single trip is unavoidably over the limit, reducing the load rather than the number of trips is the safer fix.

How much does wet material actually add to the weight?
