Length x width gives square footage directly. Standard flat ceiling paint covers about 350-400 sq ft per gallon on smooth drywall, same nominal rate as wall paint, but two things push real-world usage up: textured or popcorn ceilings can absorb 20-30% more paint because of the surface area hidden in the texture, and ceiling rolling naturally lays down a thicker coat than wall rolling because gravity and awkward overhead angles make an even thin coat harder to control.
Coat count matters more here than people expect.
