How this calculation works

Countertop area comes from two pieces: the perimeter run, at its depth (typically 25 1/2 in to clear a standard 24 in base cabinet with a slight overhang), and the island, at its own separate depth since an island is usually deeper to allow seating on one side. Backsplash area is calculated separately from a height and length you set — a 4 in standard backsplash uses relatively little slab, but a full-height backsplash running to the underside of the upper cabinets can use nearly as much material as the countertop itself.
