How to Measure a Kitchen for Cabinets

A kitchen wall looks straight and the floor looks flat, and neither assumption survives a level or a tape measure held against them for more than a few feet. Real walls lean a little, real floors slope toward a drain or settle unevenly over decades, and a cabinet run built to the single measurement taken at counter height can end up too long to fit once it's carried down to the toe kick, or level everywhere except the one corner where the floor actually rises.
Kitchen cabinet measuring has its own specific method for exactly this reason, built around the two things that are almost never true in an existing room — a perfectly plumb wall and a perfectly level floor — rather than assuming them and correcting on install day.
Measure at three heights, use the smallest
Measure the wall's length at three different heights — roughly 6 inches off the floor, at 36 inches (counter height), and at 84 inches (upper cabinet height) — rather than taking one measurement and assuming it holds true from floor to ceiling. A wall that bows even slightly gives three different numbers at those three heights, and the difference is very often more than the fraction of an inch that separates a cabinet run that fits from one that doesn't.
Use the smallest of the three measurements as the design length for the run. A cabinet order sized to the largest of the three will be tight or simply won't fit wherever the wall is actually narrower than that reading; sized to the smallest, it fits everywhere, with a small, manageable gap to scribe or fill at the point where the wall is at its widest.
Finding the floor's high point
Run a long level or a laser level along the full length of the planned cabinet run at floor level, and find the single highest point across that run — old floors settle unevenly, and it's rarely obvious to the eye which corner is actually the high one. Base cabinets get set level starting from that high point, then shimmed up to match it everywhere the floor is lower, rather than leveling from an arbitrary starting corner and discovering a gap or a lean once the run reaches the actual high spot.
This decision governs more than just the base cabinets — the countertop height, the upper cabinet height relative to the counter, and where a tile backsplash's bottom edge lands are all referenced from that same leveled starting line, so getting the high point right at the start of the job is worth the extra ten minutes it takes compared to correcting a leveling mistake after boxes are already hung.
What's inside the wall, not just what's on it
Locate and mark every wall stud along the run before anything is measured for the final order — cabinets are screwed into studs, not just into drywall, and a run planned without knowing where the studs actually fall can end up with a cabinet box whose mounting rail lands between two studs rather than on one. Note existing plumbing and electrical rough-ins too: a sink base cabinet needs its plumbing stub-outs to land inside the cabinet's actual footprint, not just somewhere along the general run, and an outlet that will end up behind a cabinet rather than above the counter needs relocating before cabinets go in, not after.
Appliance and fixture cutouts before anything is ordered
Measure the actual appliances going into the run — width, depth and the manufacturer's own required clearance on each side — rather than designing around a generic appliance-width assumption. A refrigerator opening sized from a rough guess rather than the specific model's spec sheet is one of the more common reasons a otherwise well-measured cabinet run needs a field modification on install day, since refrigerator widths in particular vary more between models than most other kitchen appliances.
Recording the run so the order doesn't drift
Write every measurement directly onto a sketch of the wall as you take it — stud locations, the floor's high point marked with a physical pencil line on the wall itself, all three wall-length readings, and appliance cutout dimensions — rather than trusting memory or a mental average of what was measured. A cabinet order is usually placed weeks before installation, and a sketch with the actual numbers on it is what keeps the final order matching what was really measured rather than a rounded recollection of it.

Should I level from the floor's high point even if it's in an inconvenient spot, like the middle of a long run?
Yes — the high point is a physical fact about the floor, not a design choice, and leveling from anywhere else just moves the same problem to wherever the true high point actually falls. A high point in the middle of a run is inconvenient to work around but not a reason to reference the level from a different, lower point instead.
How much of a gap is normal to expect between a cabinet and a wall that isn't perfectly flat?
