How this calculation works
The count side of this calculator is straightforward addition: studs times a nailing schedule per stud, sheathing panels times a nailing schedule per panel, and joist connections times whatever count a hanger or a structural tie specifies, all before waste. The harder part is what happens after that sum exists, because "16d" only fixes a nail's length. Two 16d nails, a common and a sinker, are meaningfully different weights — the sinker runs a thinner shank under a resin coating, which is why the calculator asks for nail size as a distinct choice rather than folding it into a single generic weight.
A nail's weight scales with its length and roughly the square of its shank diameter, and penny size increases both at once, so the per-pound count does not fall in a straight line as nails get bigger — it falls off a cliff. An 8d common runs about 106 to the pound; a 16d common runs about 49. That is a bigger drop than the length difference alone would suggest, and it is why swapping nail sizes on the same connection count can move the box total by more than the length change looks like it should.

Forty joist hangers at eight nails each — four through each flange — is 320 nails before waste, 352 after. Switching from the first example's 16d common to an 8d common for hanger nailing more than doubles the per-pound count, from 49 to 106, so even a 25 lb box, bought here because a bulk box happened to be the cheaper unit price, comes back at a single box rather than several. This is the case worth reading the hardware packaging for before ordering: many joist hanger manufacturers specify a particular hanger nail, shorter and thicker in the shank than a standard 8d common, and substituting a general-purpose nail can void the hanger's rated capacity even when the count and the penny size both look right on paper.
Common mistakes
- Applying one per-pound figure to the whole order regardless of which nail size is actually being bought — an 8d and a 16d common differ by more than double in nails per pound, so a single guessed conversion under- or over-orders badly depending on which way the mistake runs.

Because the two nails are the same length but not the same weight — a sinker's thinner shank and lighter coating mean more of them fit in a pound, roughly 60 against a common nail's 49. Do collated strips for a nail gun follow the same per-pound math as loose boxes?
No — strips are sold and priced by the strip, with a fixed nail count per strip set by the collation product, not by weight. How many nails does a joist hanger actually need?
