A paver walkway's excavation depth isn't a number you pick — it's the sum of every layer that's going to sit on top of it: compacted base, bedding sand, and the paver itself. Skip working that sum out before digging and the common result is a walkway that ends up sitting proud of the lawn on both sides, or a dig that's too shallow once the last layer goes in and has to be redone at the worst possible stage, right before the pavers themselves arrive.

The order that gets the depth right the first time: pick the paver before digging, since its thickness is one of the three numbers in that sum, then excavate, then base, then bedding sand, then the pavers themselves. 1. Choose the paver before digging anything

2. Excavate to the full depth, not just the paver's own thickness

That extra 0.625 inches doesn't sound like much on paper, but it's the entire difference between a walkway that finishes flush with the surrounding lawn and one that either sits noticeably proud of it or needs a deeper dig discovered only once the thinner paver's excavation is already finished and the thicker paver is on order.

The reverse mistake is just as common: excavating to a round number like 6 inches before the paver is chosen, then finding the actual base-plus-sand-plus-paver sum for the chosen product needs 7.5 or 8 inches — at that point the whole trench has to be deepened after it's already been dug and, often, after base stone has already been delivered and partially spread.

What goes wrong when the curve gets treated like the straight sections

Order paver quantity off a single flat waste percentage meant for a straight run, and a walkway with even a gentle curve comes up short exactly where it matters most — along the curve itself, where nearly every paver needs its own individual cut rather than a reusable straight offcut. A shortfall discovered mid-curve, with straight sections already laid on either side of it, often means a second, smaller order from the same batch and dye lot, which isn't always available weeks after the first delivery.

How much wider than the walkway itself should the base excavation be?

Do I need edge restraints on a straight walkway, or only on curves?

Both need them — edge restraint keeps the whole field from spreading laterally under foot traffic over time regardless of whether the path is straight or curved, and a walkway installed without it commonly shows gapping seams and shifted pavers within a season or two even on a perfectly straight run.

Can I use polymeric sand instead of regular joint sand between the pavers?

Yes, and it's common specifically for a walkway that sees regular foot traffic, since polymeric sand hardens in the joints and resists washout and weed growth better than plain sand — it needs to be swept in and activated with water exactly per the product's instructions, since getting it wet too early or leaving residue on the paver face can leave a visible haze.

How do I handle a walkway that crosses a slight slope along its length?

Is it worth adding a geotextile fabric layer under the base stone?
