This one is different: it builds that percentage instead of asking for it, out of five things that actually drive cut loss — the layout you're cutting to, the shape of the room, whether the material has a repeat to match, how small the room is, and how many corners break it up. Nothing else here produces a percentage as its answer; everything else turns a percentage into a quantity.
A flat 10% is a fine guess for a square room in a straight lay. It is a bad guess for a 6 by 20 ft hallway, worse for a herringbone floor, and actively wrong for a small bathroom with a repeat pattern and three jogs around fixtures — all of which lose material for reasons a flat number can't see. This page adds those reasons up individually and reports which one is doing the damage, so the figure you carry into a shopping list is built from your room rather than borrowed from someone else's.

How this calculation works
The layout contribution is set first and does most of the early lifting: a straight lay starts at 6%, a 45-degree diagonal at 14%, and herringbone or basketweave at 18%, because each of those patterns leaves a different number of cut ends along the perimeter for every whole piece laid. Room shape is added on top of that by comparing your room's actual perimeter to the perimeter a square of the same floor area would have — a long, narrow room, or one with a bay or an alcove, has more edge per square foot than a square room does, and every foot of edge is where a cut eventually happens.
Three smaller contributions round it out. A material with a printed or textured repeat wastes up to a full repeat length on every piece if the repeat doesn't divide evenly into your piece length, so that gap is converted into a percentage of its own. A small room adds a fixed penalty, because starter and finishing cuts cost roughly the same square footage in a 300 sq ft room as they do in a 60 sq ft one, and that fixed cost is a much bigger share of a small floor. Extra corners and jogs — an island, an alcove, a chimney breast — each add a return cut the plain rectangle math doesn't see. All five add together, then the total is capped at 35% and rounded to a whole percent.
- The layout contribution assumes you already know your pattern going in — decide the lay before running this page, because switching from a straight lay to a diagonal one after ordering leaves the waste figure describing a job that isn't the one being built anymore.
- The shape contribution is capped at 6 percentage points on its own — an extremely oblong room needs more than a bigger percentage, it usually needs the layout rethought.

- 6 percentage points for a straight lay or running bond, 14 for a 45-degree diagonal, 18 for herringbone or basketweave — set once by which of the three you choose, because the lay itself decides how many cut ends occur along a given perimeter.
- roomShape
- Compares actual room perimeter to 4 x sqrt(area), the perimeter of a square with the same floor area, and scales the difference into a contribution capped at 6 points. A room already close to square scores near zero here; a long or notched one scores higher.
- patternRepeat
- (pattern repeat ÷ piece length) x 50, capped at 12 points. Set to zero for material with no repeat to match; for wallpaper, patterned tile, or plank flooring with a printed repeat, the bigger the repeat is relative to the piece, the more each piece loses to matching it.
- smallRoomPenalty
- 4 points under 60 sq ft, 2 points under 120 sq ft, zero above that — a step function standing in for the fixed square footage every room loses to starter and finishing cuts, regardless of the room's size.
- extraCorners
- 1.5 points per corner or jog beyond a plain rectangle, capped at 5 points total. An island, an alcove, or a chimney breast each count as one; a plain four-wall room enters zero.
- 35% cap
- The five contributions can add to more than 35 on paper; the recommendation stops there. Past that point the fix is usually the layout or the room, not a bigger order.
The five contributions are additive rather than a single lookup table, on purpose: a herringbone floor in a small, notched bathroom with a repeat to match should not get the same waste figure as a herringbone floor in a large square den, and a lookup table keyed only on 'pattern' can't tell those two rooms apart.

- A working default derived on this page, calibrated to the low-to-mid end of the ranges commonly cited in tile and flooring trade guidance for cut waste by layout — roughly 5-10% for a straight lay, 15-20% for a diagonal, and higher again for herringbone or basketweave. The other four contributions on this page fill in the rest of that spread, so the layout figure alone is set conservatively rather than at the top of any published range.

- Not a published standard — a working ceiling set on this page. Past roughly a third over, buying more material stops being the answer; the layout, the room's shape, or the material itself is usually the thing that needs to change.

- Derived on this page from plane geometry: the ratio of a room's actual perimeter to the perimeter of a square of equal area. The cap stops an extremely long or thin room from dominating the total on its own — a room that far from square typically needs more than a percentage adjustment anyway.
- 1.5 points per extra corner, capped at 5
- Not a published figure — a working estimate treating each additional corner or jog as roughly one more return cut than a plain rectangle needs. The cap keeps a highly irregular floor plan from pushing the recommendation off the scale by corner count alone.

Almost the entire 6% here is the layout contribution on its own — this room's perimeter is only 0.4% longer than a square of the same 120 sq ft would have, so the shape adds essentially nothing, and there's no repeat, no small-room penalty, and no extra corners to pile on. This is close to the floor this calculator can produce: a straight lay in a room that's already nearly square.
127.2 sq ft is the order quantity this recommends against 120 sq ft measured — 7.2 sq ft of margin. If the material you're buying comes in boxes that cover, say, 12 sq ft each, that margin barely nudges the box count over what a plain area calculation would already round up to, which is the point: a nearly-square room in a plain lay doesn't need much cushion, and a flat 10% would have been buying air here.

Add up the raw contributions here — 18 for herringbone, 12 for a 6-inch repeat on a 3-inch piece, 4 for a 42 sq ft room under the 60 sq ft threshold, 4.5 for three extra corners around fixtures, and a rounding error's worth of shape — and the total comes to over 38%. The 35% cap is doing real work on this room: the recommendation is lower than the arithmetic actually produced, because past a third over, more percentage stops being a useful answer.
56.7 sq ft against a 42 sq ft floor is a lot of extra material for a small room, and that's the honest read: herringbone with a mismatched repeat in a cut-up bathroom is one of the most wasteful combinations this page can describe. If the number feels too high to buy against, the layout is the lever to pull — dropping to a straight lay removes 12 of those points before anything else changes, which is a bigger single move than trimming any other input.
Common mistakes
- Carrying a flat 10% into every job regardless of layout. A herringbone floor and a straight-lay floor of the same size do not lose material at the same rate, and treating them the same under-orders one and over-orders the other.
- Leaving the pattern repeat at zero for material that actually has one. Patterned tile, some plank flooring, and almost all wallpaper have a repeat, and skipping that field silently drops up to 12 percentage points this page would otherwise add.
- Measuring only the room's bounding rectangle and setting extra corners to zero on a room with an island, an alcove, or a jog around a fixture. Those returns are exactly what the corner contribution exists to catch.
- Assuming a bigger room needs a bigger waste percentage. It's the opposite for the small-room penalty specifically — fixed cut losses shrink as a share of a larger floor, so this page's small-room contribution goes to zero above 120 sq ft.
- Treating the 35% output as a hard ceiling on how much material could actually be lost. It's a recommendation ceiling, not a physical one — an unusually punishing combination of layout, repeat and shape can genuinely lose more, and the honest response at that point is to reconsider the layout rather than order past 35%.

FAQ
Why does a small room get a bigger waste percentage than a large one, all else equal?
Because the losses the small-room penalty is standing in for — the first cut piece of a row, the sliver trimmed off the last one, the offcut left after fitting around a fixture — cost roughly the same amount of material whichever room they happen in. In a 300 sq ft room that fixed loss barely moves the percentage; in a 50 sq ft bathroom it can be several points on its own.
Should I run this before or after I've picked the material?
Before, if you can — the pattern repeat field needs the material's actual repeat, and the layout choice is easiest to change before anything's ordered. If you've already committed to a material, run it with that repeat entered; the recommendation adjusts to it either way.
My room is L-shaped. Do I measure the bounding rectangle or the actual floor area?
Enter the actual room dimensions as best you can approximate them, and use the extra corners field for the inside and outside corners the L-shape creates beyond a plain rectangle. The room-shape contribution is already comparing your entered perimeter to a square of the same area, so an accurate perimeter matters more here than on a plain rectangular room.
Why is the room-shape contribution capped at only 6 points when a really long room clearly wastes more than that?
The cap keeps one input from swamping the other four on paper. In practice, a room whose perimeter is dramatically longer than a square of the same area — a 4 by 30 ft hallway, for instance — usually isn't well served by a single flat percentage at all; splitting the run into shorter sections or reconsidering the pattern direction along the long axis does more than any waste number could.
Can the recommended figure come out lower than what I'd have guessed on my own?
Yes, and that's often the more useful result. A square room in a straight lay with no repeat and no extra corners can land at 6%, well under the flat 10% habit — over-ordering by 4 points on a large expensive material is real money left at the yard, and this page exists as much to catch that as to catch under-ordering.
What happens if I set a baseQuantity instead of leaving it at zero?
The recommended percentage is applied to that quantity instead of to the room's raw area — useful if you've already measured a linear or unit quantity elsewhere (a length of baseboard, a count of panels) and just want this page's waste logic applied to it rather than recomputing area from room dimensions.
