Soffit and fascia sit on the same eave, get bought on the same trip, and are measured in completely different units for a reason that's easy to overlook: soffit is a panel covering an area — the underside of the overhang — while fascia is a board running a length — the vertical trim board along the eave's edge. Widen the overhang and you add square footage of soffit without adding a single inch of fascia, because the fascia's length is set by the eave's run, not by how far the overhang projects.

This calculator sizes both from the same eave and rake measurements but lets them scale independently the way they actually do — soffit panels from eave length times overhang width, fascia pieces from eave length alone, plus the J-channel and F-channel that finish both edges of the soffit run. A roof with a modest eave length and a generous overhang can need nearly as much soffit as a much longer eave with a narrow one, while needing far less fascia.

How this calculation works

Total eave and rake length adds the horizontal eaves to the sloped rake lengths at the gable ends, since both get soffit and both get fascia along the same roofline. Soffit area is that total length times the overhang width converted to feet — a pure area calculation, which is why doubling the overhang doubles the soffit panels needed for the same eave.

Fascia, by contrast, is priced by length alone: total eave and rake footage divided into stock piece lengths, with waste added for the mitres at every corner. Overhang width never enters that calculation at all, because the fascia board's own width is set at the factory, not by how far the soffit behind it projects. J-channel and F-channel run along both edges of the soffit — one at the wall, one at the fascia — so channel footage is twice the eave length, independent of overhang as well.

  • A wider overhang adds soffit panels roughly in proportion to the extra width, but adds zero fascia pieces and zero channel footage — the three materials genuinely scale on different variables.
  • Rake length should be measured along the roof's slope, not on the flat plan — a raked gable end is longer measured up the pitch than its horizontal run alone would suggest.

Because soffit scales with overhang and fascia doesn't, the two materials' quantities move independently of each other on the same job — a fact worth checking explicitly rather than assuming that a roof needing more of one automatically needs more of the other.

128 total linear feet of eave and rake at a 16 in overhang needs 16 soffit panels and 12 pieces of fascia — two figures that look like they should track each other but come from entirely separate arithmetic: soffit from 170.7 sq ft of area, fascia from 128 linear feet directly.

This roof has less than half the total eave length of the ranch above — 56 ft against 128 — and needs exactly half the fascia pieces, 6 against 12, which is what a pure length calculation predicts almost perfectly. Soffit panels, though, only drop from 16 to 13 — nowhere near half — because the wider 30 in overhang nearly doubles the area each foot of eave covers, almost entirely offsetting the shorter roofline.

A much smaller building needing nearly as much soffit as a considerably bigger one, while needing half the fascia and half the channel, is the asymmetry this page exists to show plainly: check overhang against soffit, and eave length against fascia, as two separate questions rather than assuming one material's quantity tracks the other's.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming fascia and soffit quantities scale together. They don't — fascia tracks eave length alone, and soffit tracks eave length times overhang width, which is why the second worked example on this page needs nearly as much soffit as the first while needing half the fascia.
  • Measuring rake length on the flat plan instead of along the actual roof slope. A gable rake measured horizontally understates both the soffit and fascia needed at that end of the roof, since the true length runs up the pitch.
  • Forgetting channel runs both edges of the soffit, not just one. Channel footage is double the eave length for that reason, and ordering it at the same footage as the fascia under-orders by half.
  • Applying a flat waste percentage to a roof with an unusually high number of corners without adjusting it upward. Mitre cuts at each corner are the main driver of fascia waste specifically, and a roof with many small gable returns needs more allowance than a simple rectangular footprint.
  • Buying overhang width to match a neighboring house's look without checking it against ventilation requirements for the attic space above. A wider overhang increases soffit area on this page's numbers, but the actual overhang width a roof needs is also a ventilation and framing decision this calculator doesn't make.

FAQ

If I widen the overhang, does the fascia board itself need to be a different size?

This page's fascia piece count doesn't change with overhang width, but the fascia board's own depth (how tall the board is, covering the rafter tail end) is a separate specification decision tied to the rafter size and overhang framing detail, not something this calculator's overhang field controls. Confirm the board depth against the actual framing before ordering.

Why does a smaller roof sometimes need almost as much soffit as a bigger one?

Because soffit area is eave length times overhang width, and a shorter eave with a wide overhang can cover nearly as much area as a longer eave with a narrow one. The second worked example on this page — a 56 ft eave at 30 in against a 128 ft eave at 16 in — shows exactly this: 13 panels against 16, not the roughly 7 panels a simple length ratio would predict.

Do vented soffit panels need a different quantity calculation than solid panels?

The area and panel-count arithmetic is the same either way — vented and solid panels are typically sold in the same stock sizes. What changes is whether the panel provides the intake ventilation the attic space needs, which is a separate ventilation-sizing question this page doesn't address; the attic ventilation calculator covers that.

Should rake length include the full gable triangle or just the sloped edge?

Just the sloped edge — the rake board and its soffit run along the raked edge of the gable end, not across the triangle's base. Measure the actual length of that sloped roofline, ideally along the pitch rather than its horizontal projection, since a steep roof's rake is noticeably longer than the horizontal distance alone.

Why is the waste percentage the same field for panels, channel and fascia instead of three separate ones?

For simplicity, since all three are cut from the same roofline and generally see similar corner and mitre losses on a typical roof. A roof with an unusual number of small returns or dormers benefits from running this calculator at a higher waste percentage overall, since there's no way to apply a different rate to fascia alone within this page.
