How this calculation works
Openings come off the wall face first, the same as any masonry surface — a window or door doesn't get veneered over. What's specific to stone veneer is the next step: outside corners are measured in vertical linear feet (how far the corner runs, not how wide the wall is), and each linear foot of corner piece is treated as displacing roughly 3/4 square foot of flat stone that would otherwise have gone there. That deduction comes out of the wall face before flat boxes are counted, so a wall with a lot of corner footage needs noticeably fewer flat boxes than its raw square footage would suggest.

Why does waste run higher on corners than the general default suggests?
