A chimney breast is mostly corners, and stone veneer's corner pieces are sold by the linear foot, not the square foot — which is why a flat-stone order sized straight off the fireplace wall's total square footage is almost always too high. Every foot of corner run eats into the flat order by roughly the same fraction of a square foot regardless of which wall it's on, and a chimney breast, projecting out from the wall on two sides, simply has far more of that corner footage packed into its total area than an ordinary flat accent wall ever does.

1. Measure every outside corner before measuring the flat face

Manufactured stone over a framed chimney breast needs a weather-resistant barrier, lath fastened into the framing rather than into sheathing alone, and a scratch coat — the same assembly the stone veneer calculator counts lath and mortar for. Over existing solid masonry the lath comes out of the assembly entirely, which changes the order and is why the calculator asks.

The failure this prevents is not an ordering error but a structural one. Veneer adds real weight to a wall that may never have carried any, and a chimney breast built as a decorative enclosure around a metal flue is not the same wall as a masonry chimney, however similar the two look once finished. Establish which one you have before ordering anything: if the answer is not obvious from the framing, it is a question for whoever inspects the fireplace, not one to settle from the room side.
