Each debris type gets its own weight and volume figure per unit — per roofing square, per drywall sheet, per square foot of carpet, per linear foot of lumber, per cubic foot of broken concrete — and those figures differ by close to two orders of magnitude between the lightest and heaviest material this page handles. A roofing square of shingles runs about 250 lb; a cubic foot of concrete runs about 150 lb on its own, meaning even a modest slab breakout can add thousands of pounds from a footprint that looks small next to a room full of carpet and drywall.

2.5 tons of shingles from just 20 squares only fills 6.6 cu yd — a 10-yard box would have plenty of room left, but its 2-ton included limit is already 0.5 tons short of what this roof alone weighs. Why does the tonnage cap matter if I'm not being charged by weight?

Because almost every dumpster rental includes a tonnage cap even on a flat-rate quote, with an overage fee per ton beyond it — the flat rate isn't unlimited weight, it's a weight allowance bundled into the price. Checking the tonnage total against the included cap before the truck arrives is how you avoid a surprise line item on the final invoice.

Should concrete always go in its own dumpster?

It's usually worth pricing separately even if you don't end up doing it, because concrete's weight per cubic foot is so much higher than every other material this page tracks that a mixed load with concrete in it often needs a bigger box purely for the weight, when a dedicated clean-fill container sized for concrete alone would have been smaller and frequently cheaper.

How much heavier does wet debris actually get?
