How this calculation works
For a room narrower than the roll width, required yardage is simply room length (rounded up to account for pattern/pile direction) times the roll width, divided by 9 to get square yards — even if the room is only 10 feet wide, you're still paying for the full 12-foot roll width across that run. For a room wider than 12 feet, the calculator adds a second strip and a seam allowance, since carpet installers plan seams away from high-traffic paths and doorways where possible, which can mean more overlap than a naive area split would suggest.
Pile direction matters too: all carpet strips in a room need to run the same direction (the pile 'lays' one way), so offcuts from one strip usually can't be flipped and reused as a mismatched-direction seam elsewhere.

- An extra 5 percentage points added on top of whatever waste value is entered, applied only when the room is wider than the roll — this is the seam allowance, and it stacks with the ordinary waste figure rather than replacing it.

The room's 9-foot dimension fits inside a 12-foot roll, so no seam is needed — but the order still prices the full 12-foot roll width against the 11-foot run (with 10% waste), landing at 17 sq yd against the room's raw 99 sq ft (11 sq yd). Three of the twelve feet on every run of that roll — a quarter of its width — never touch this floor.
That unused quarter is not a rounding artifact — it is what buying from a fixed-width roll actually costs on a room narrower than the roll. Those 3 unused feet become scrap unless a second, narrower room nearby can use the offcut.

This room's 270 sq ft is about 2.7 times the bedroom's 99, but the yardage order only grows by about 2.1 times — 35 sq yd against 17 — because crossing the 12-foot roll width changes which penalty applies rather than removing one. This room pays a genuine seaming premium (waste plus 5 points) instead of the fixed roll-width overcharge that hit the narrower bedroom disproportionately hard.
That is the real takeaway across both examples: a fixed roll-width penalty hurts a small room's percentage more than a big one's, while a seam penalty scales with area either way. Room square footage alone never predicts yardage here — the roll width relative to the room decides which formula branch, and which penalty, applies.
Common mistakes
- Calculating carpet by simple floor area instead of roll-width math — this consistently underestimates real yardage on any room not exactly a multiple of 12 feet wide.
- Ignoring seam placement — a seam in the middle of a walkway wears and shows faster than one tucked under furniture or at a closet line.
- Not accounting for pattern repeat on patterned carpet, similar to wallpaper — plain carpet has almost no repeat waste, patterned carpet does.

FAQ
Why is my carpet order more yardage than my room's square footage?
Because carpet is cut from fixed-width rolls, not custom-cut to your exact floor shape — any room dimension that isn't a clean multiple of the roll width leaves unusable offcut, and that offcut still counts as yardage you paid for.
Can leftover carpet from one room be used in another?
Sometimes, if the pile direction and dye lot match and the offcut piece is large enough for the second room's shape — but it's not guaranteed, so don't count on it when sizing the original order.
Does carpet pad thickness affect how much carpet I need?
No — pad is calculated by area alone, independent of the roll-width seaming math that drives carpet yardage; a thicker pad does affect cost and comfort/durability, and very thick pad can void some carpet warranties, so it's worth checking the carpet manufacturer's maximum recommended pad thickness.
Should stairs be measured differently from open rooms?
