The grout joint isn't a styling choice made independently of the tile — the tile itself decides how narrow a joint can safely go, because a rectified tile and a pressed tile are cut to different tolerances and behave differently at their edges. A joint narrow enough to look almost seamless on rectified porcelain can leave a pressed tile's slightly uneven edges visibly clashing at every corner, and going the other way, an unnecessarily wide joint on precision-cut tile just adds grout lines a tighter installation never needed.

Lippage: the real reason a joint exists on a flat floor
Lippage is the height difference between the edges of two adjacent tiles at a shared joint — one tile's edge sitting slightly proud of its neighbor's — and it comes from substrate flatness, tile warpage, or installation technique, not from the joint width itself. A wider joint doesn't eliminate lippage, but it gives more visual and physical transition space for a small height difference to sit in rather than reading as an abrupt edge you can catch a foot or a mop on. This is exactly why large-format tile, which is more prone to slight warping across its larger surface and more sensitive to substrate flatness in general, is commonly installed with both a flatter substrate underneath and a wider joint on top than a small tile would need for the identical product line.
Large-format plank tile carries a related, lesser-known precaution: installers commonly limit the offset between rows to roughly a third of the plank's length rather than the traditional half-offset running bond brick pattern uses, specifically because a wider plank offset at the true halfway point concentrates more lippage risk at the ends of adjacent planks than a narrower offset does.
Sanded versus unsanded: where the threshold actually sits
Unsanded grout is commonly used for joints narrower than about 1/8 inch, since sand aggregate doesn't pack or bond well in a genuinely narrow gap and can leave visible voids or an inconsistent finish. Sanded grout takes over at 1/8 inch and wider, where the sand aggregate adds real strength, reduces shrinkage cracking across the wider joint, and gives the grout enough structural body to fill it properly. Unsanded grout is also the gentler choice on soft or polished surfaces — glazed glass tile or polished natural stone in particular — since sanded grout's aggregate can scratch a delicate finish even at a joint width that would otherwise call for sanded grout on a more durable tile.
