A small bathroom remodel touches more trades per square foot than almost any other room in the house — plumbing, electrical, tile, ventilation, and finish carpentry all stack into a space that might be 35 square feet total. That density is exactly why sequence matters more here than on a bigger job: there's no slack to absorb a decision made out of order, and the room's small size means every layer of buildup on the floor — subfloor, backer board, thinset, tile — actually matters against a door swing and a drain height that were fixed before the remodel even started.

4. Plan the fan duct route while the ceiling is still open

Both problems — the wrong board thickness and the wrong flange height — trace back to the same root cause: the floor was built to a generic assumption instead of to the tile that ended up going down.
