A floor's waste factor has almost nothing to do with the size of the room. It comes from the perimeter — every wall the covering has to be cut to fit against, every doorway, every place a pattern changes direction — and a small room with an irregular perimeter can waste more material proportionally than a large room with a clean rectangular one. That is why the waste percentages in this group vary by layout rather than by square footage, and why doubling a room's area does not double the waste.
The other thing this group shares is that a layout choice made before any material is bought — which direction the boards run, whether tile is laid straight or on a diagonal — is really a cost decision wearing a design decision's clothes. The same room in the same material can cost noticeably different amounts depending on which way the pattern is oriented, because orientation changes how many cuts the perimeter forces, not because one direction uses more material to cover the same floor.
Waste lives at the perimeter, not spread across the area
Picture two rooms of the same square footage: one a plain rectangle, the other with a bay window, a closet notch, and an offset doorway. Both need the same amount of material to cover their floor area exactly, but the second room's irregular perimeter forces far more cuts, and every cut produces an offcut that is rarely long enough to use again elsewhere in the same room. That is the entire reason a 10 percent waste allowance on a simple rectangle and a 10 percent allowance on a complicated one do not mean the same thing in practice — the plain rectangle's allowance is padding, and the irregular room's is closer to a requirement.
Tile and hard flooring feel this more than carpet does, because a tile or plank is a rigid unit that either fits a space or gets cut, where carpet can sometimes be seamed to follow an irregular wall line instead of cut and discarded. That is part of why the tile calculator and the flooring calculator treat waste as layout-dependent rather than handing every room the same flat percentage regardless of its shape.
Layout direction changes the cut count before a single plank is bought
Running boards the length of a hallway instead of across its width is not just a look — it changes how many full-length pieces fit before a cut is needed, and a hallway that swallows whole boards end to end wastes far less than the same hallway run the other way, where every board is cut short and the offcut is too small to reuse. The same logic applies to tile laid on the diagonal: a diagonal layout looks different and also forces every tile touching a wall to be cut at an angle, which uses more tile than a straight layout on the identical floor.
None of that is a reason to avoid a diagonal or a cross-run layout — both are sometimes the right visual call for a room — but it is a reason to decide the layout before pricing the job rather than after, since the material cost genuinely moves with the decision. A 5 to 10 percentage point swing in waste between a straight and a diagonal layout on the same floor is common enough that it is worth checking before committing to the more complex pattern purely for its look.
Grout and thinset are sized off the tile, not the room
Once a tile count and a joint width are settled, grout and thinset become their own separate calculation rather than a percentage tacked onto the tile order. Thinset coverage depends on trowel notch size and tile back-butter practice as much as on floor area, and grout volume depends on the total length of joint a given tile size and spacing produces — a small-format tile has dramatically more joint length per square foot than a large-format one, and therefore needs noticeably more grout for the identical floor area.
That is why the grout and thinset calculator takes tile dimensions and joint width as its own inputs rather than inheriting a total from the tile page — the same relationship a joint width has to mortar quantity in masonry work, worked out fresh here because tile grout and mortar mix are different products with different yield figures entirely.
The order that avoids relaying a floor: substrate, covering, then trim last
Substrate and setting materials come first in this group for a practical reason: everything that follows sits on top of them, and a substrate decision made too late means pulling up material that has already been set. Backer board thickness, self-leveling compound, or an underlayment choice all change the finished floor height, and that height matters for door clearances and transitions in a way that is expensive to discover after the covering is already down.
Trim comes last of all, and specifically after the flooring rather than before, because baseboard and shoe moulding exist partly to hide the expansion gap every hard flooring product needs around its perimeter to move with humidity and temperature. Measuring and cutting baseboard before the floor is in means guessing at that gap instead of covering the one that actually exists, and it is the single most common reason a trim order comes up short on a room where the flooring shifted the final wall-to-floor line by even half an inch.
Epoxy behaves like a coating, not a covering
Epoxy is the odd one out in this group because nothing about it is cut to fit a perimeter — it is rolled or troweled on at a stated thickness, and its quantity comes from a coverage rate the way paint's does, not from a piece count the way tile or plank flooring's does. That makes waste on an epoxy job a different kind of problem entirely: the risk is under-mixing a batch and running out mid-pour on a floor that needs to be finished in one continuous session, rather than accumulating small offcuts room by room.
Cure time adds a scheduling constraint none of the other materials in this group carries in the same way — a coat applied before the previous one has cured enough can fail to bond properly, which is a different kind of mistake than simply running short on tile. The epoxy calculator is worth running with the actual product's coverage rate rather than a generic one, since coverage varies more between epoxy systems than it does between two bags of the same tile's thinset.

The flooring calculator, since floating planks are ordered and wasted the way hard flooring is — by plank length and layout direction — rather than by joint width and grout coverage the way tile is. Tile's calculator assumes a wet-set or thinset installation with a joint to fill, which a floating floor does not have.
Do I run the grout and thinset calculator before or after the tile calculator?
After, once the tile size, layout, and any cut allowance are settled. Thinset and grout quantities depend on the actual joint width and tile dimensions chosen, not on the room's area alone, so running them first means guessing at inputs the tile calculator would otherwise supply directly.
