How this calculation works
Waste is applied first, to the raw quantity you're covering, and the result is divided by coverage per unit and rounded up — you cannot buy 16.4 units of anything, so the calculator always rounds to the next whole one before pricing starts. Tax is then applied to the subtotal of whole units, not to the raw quantity, which matters because tax on a rounded-up order is always at least as much as tax on the exact amount you needed.
The bulk comparison runs the same arithmetic a second time at a different unit price and a minimum order size, and reports the smaller of two things: whether your order already clears that minimum, and if it doesn't, how many units it would take before the bulk price genuinely beats retail. That second figure — the break-even — is the one worth reading closely, because a bulk minimum that's well above what the job needs is not a discount, it's a bigger bill dressed as one.

The formula
units = ceil(quantity x (1 + waste/100) ÷ coveragePerUnit); total = units x unitPrice x (1 + tax/100) + delivery
- quantity x (1 + waste/100)
- The raw amount you're covering, inflated by a waste percentage before anything is rounded — entering waste here rather than after rounding means the waste allowance itself gets rounded up along with everything else, not lost to it.
- units
- Whole purchasable units, rounded up from the waste-inflated quantity divided by coverage per unit. This is the number that appears on an order form; it is never fractional.
- unitPrice / bulkUnitPrice
- Two separate prices per unit: what you'd pay buying at your actual quantity, and what a bulk program charges once you clear its minimum. The gap between them is what makes a break-even point exist at all.
- bulkMinimumUnits
- The smallest order a bulk price applies to. The bulk total always prices at least this many units, so ordering bulk on a job smaller than the minimum means paying for units the job doesn't use.
- all-in cost per unit covered
- Total cost divided by the original quantity you needed covered, not by the number of units bought. It's the comparable figure across two pricing scenarios that round up to different unit counts.
- break-even units
- The unit count at which bulkMinimumUnits x bulkUnitPrice equals unitPrice x that same count — the point past which buying the bulk minimum costs less than buying retail at your own quantity, ignoring tax and delivery, which apply to both sides roughly equally.
The bulk total always prices bulkMinimumUnits or your actual unit count, whichever is larger — never the raw quantity you measured. That's deliberate: a bulk program doesn't let you buy under its minimum at the bulk rate, so pricing anything less would overstate the savings.
Where these numbers come from
- Waste applied before rounding, not after
- Derived on this page rather than a convention borrowed from elsewhere: applying waste to the raw quantity and then rounding the total up to whole units means the waste allowance itself survives the round-up. Applying waste after rounding to whole units would sometimes lose the entire allowance to a coverage rate that already divided evenly.
- Tax applied to the unit subtotal
- Standard sales-tax mechanics, not specific to this site: tax is levied on what you're actually billed for, which is the rounded-up unit count, not the raw quantity measured. Your own jurisdiction's rate and rules on delivery-fee taxability are inputs you supply; this page doesn't assume either.
- Break-even computed pre-tax and pre-delivery
- Derived on this page. Tax and delivery apply to both the retail and bulk totals at roughly the same rate, so including them in the break-even calculation would move the answer only slightly while making the arithmetic harder to audit — the unit-price comparison alone is the part that actually decides which option is cheaper.
- Bulk order priced at the greater of your units or the bulk minimum
- Trade convention: bulk and contractor pricing programs almost universally set a minimum order quantity below which the bulk rate simply doesn't apply, and suppliers do not sell a partial minimum at the discounted rate.

The break-even figure makes the decision concrete: bulk only beats retail once a job needs about 34 units, and this one needs 17. That's the number worth remembering rather than the sticker price on either option — a lower unit price is not automatically a better deal until the job is big enough to actually use the minimum it's tied to.

This job needs 168 units at retail against a break-even point of 79 — more than double what's required to make bulk pricing worthwhile, so here the bulk minimum isn't a constraint at all, it's already cleared with room to spare. The retail total comes to 994.92; running the same order through the bulk price instead brings it to roughly 790, a real saving rather than a rounding difference.
Compare this to the smaller job above and the pattern is the whole point of running both totals: the same lower bulk unit price is worth nothing on a 17-unit order and worth real money on a 168-unit one, purely because of where each order sits relative to the same minimum. Checking the break-even before assuming bulk is always the cheaper option is what this page is for.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the two unit prices directly instead of the two totals. A lower bulk unit price paired with a minimum well above the job's actual need is usually the more expensive option overall, not the cheaper one.
- Applying waste to the unit count instead of the raw quantity. Waste is a percentage of material needed, not of units purchased — applying it after rounding double-counts the rounding and slightly over-orders.
- Ignoring the all-in cost per unit covered when comparing suppliers with different delivery fees. Two suppliers with the same unit price can produce very different real costs once a flat delivery fee is spread across a small versus a large order.
- Assuming tax applies the same way to delivery as it does to materials. Some jurisdictions tax delivery, some don't — this page adds delivery after tax specifically so you can see the material tax figure on its own and adjust for your local rule.
- Treating the break-even number as a purchase recommendation rather than a decision point. It tells you where bulk starts to win; it doesn't tell you whether padding an order up to that number to unlock the discount is worth the extra material you won't use.

FAQ
Why does the bulk total sometimes come out higher even though the unit price is lower?
Because the bulk total always prices at least the bulk minimum, not your actual unit count. If your job needs far fewer units than the minimum, you're paying the lower per-unit price on a larger quantity than you need, and that can cost more overall than paying a higher price on the smaller quantity you'd actually use.
Should I round my order up to the break-even number to get the bulk discount?
Only if you have a real use for the extra material — a future repair, a second project, or genuine confidence you'll need it. Buying past the break-even point to unlock bulk pricing is still buying material you didn't need; the discount makes the excess cheaper, it doesn't make it useful.
Does this calculator account for a supplier's return policy on unopened units?
No — it assumes every unit bought is a unit paid for and kept. If your supplier accepts returns on unused stock, that changes the practical risk of rounding up or ordering toward a bulk minimum, but it's a policy this page has no way to know and doesn't try to guess at.
Why is delivery a flat fee instead of scaling with order size?
Because most material delivery genuinely is billed that way — one truck, one trip charge — up to whatever load limit the vehicle has. If your supplier charges per pallet or per load instead of a single flat fee, run this page once per load and add the fees separately rather than entering a single blended number.
What if I don't know my exact tax rate yet?
Enter your best estimate and treat the total as provisional until you have the real figure — tax is a small percentage of the subtotal in most cases, so an estimate within a point or two won't meaningfully change the units-to-buy figure, which is usually the harder number to get right.
Can I use this for a service charged per unit rather than a physical material?
Yes — nothing in the arithmetic requires the unit to be a physical product. A per-unit service fee, a per-panel installation charge, or any other quantity-based cost runs through the same calculation as long as you have a coverage rate and a price per unit to enter.
