How this calculation works

Net wall area = gross wall area minus window and door openings. Squares needed = net wall area / 100, adjusted for the specific material's actual coverage per package — vinyl siding panels have a fixed exposed-face width per course with a locking overlap that's already accounted for in the manufacturer's per-square coverage figure, while fiber-cement lap siding's exposed reveal (how much of each board shows) can vary by installation choice, which changes effective coverage per square more than vinyl does.

Corner trim, J-channel around openings, and starter strip along the base are priced and measured separately by linear footage, not included in the field-siding square count — leaving them out of the order is one of the most common siding-estimate gaps.
