How this calculation works

Box count = sum of per-room averages across your home's room mix, broken into size categories (small boxes for books and dense items, medium for general household goods, large for lightweight bulky items, and specialty boxes for wardrobe/dishes/mirrors). Kitchens and living/dining rooms consistently need the most boxes per room in published moving-industry data, since they hold a high volume of small, individually-wrapped items; bedrooms need fewer boxes but more of that volume tends to go in large boxes for linens and clothing.

Home size still matters, but as a multiplier on room count and room size, not as the primary driver — a studio apartment's kitchen needs meaningfully fewer boxes than a large family kitchen even if both are being packed by 'square footage of home' logic that ignores what's actually in the room.
